A GUIDE TO AI IN SCHOOLS
A Guide to AI in Schools: Perspectives for the Perplexed is a groundbreaking resource from MIT’s Teaching Systems Lab that brings together the voices of over 100 educators, students, and school leaders navigating the rapidly changing landscape of AI in education. Rather than prescribing one “right way,” the guide invites readers into the real conversations happening in classrooms and faculty meetings — debating ethics, policies, student learning, teacher workload, and the future of schooling in the age of generative AI.
Among the contributors, Chad Sussex, 7–12 Assistant Principal, AI Task Force Leader at Winterset CSD, and AI Consultant, played a pivotal role. His leadership and insights helped to shape the guide’s discussion on developing thoughtful and balanced AI policies. Chad emphasized the importance of including AI skeptics in policy-making, noting that dissenting perspectives ensure more well-rounded and resilient decisions. His experience in leading an AI task force also grounded the guide’s exploration of how schools can responsibly evaluate tools, protect student data, and build teacher confidence.
For educators, policymakers, and communities asking “Do we need and want AI in our schools?”, this guide offers both caution and inspiration — helping schools build policies and practices that align with their values, missions, and the needs of their learners.
